NORA CHILDERS

Artist Statement

I have learned that no matter how many times I’ve tried to explore what drives me to happiness and self-worth, I find myself painting or creating every time. Finally, accepting my whole self in
what I love to do is probably the most uplifting feeling one could have. I love art, simple as that.  I can sit here for hours and try to come up with why but there is no concrete explanation I chose the path I chose. I grew up around artists in my family so I’m convinced paint runs through my veins like the salt water from the Mississippi Gulf Coast which is where I’m from. I dab around in all kinds of mediums and discovered my strengths are in acrylics, oils, watercolor, and charcoal. My work is unique because I enjoy the experimental aspect of it to create a statement for myself. Believing there is always light in darkness then creating pieces that glow in the dark. Thus, I label myself as an experimental artist. Inspired by the works of Vincent Van Gogh (Impressionism), Walter Anderson (Nature), and Alex North (Photographer). I hope to inspire those around me with what I do as I believe in dreams coming true because mine did.

Biography

A natural talent, completely self-taught - beyond extensive exposure to the arts in high school - Nora is the quintessential triple threat: Artist, Activist, and Actress.  Driven by a determination to experiment, every project is undertaken for the sheer joy of the creative process itself, free of the cobwebs of predetermined expectations that seem to stifle so many.

With Nora, you never know what to expect.  When she goes down the rabbit hole, as she calls it, she may come back up with a wildly rendered acrylic ink portrait or a carefully crafted, resin preserved, assemblage piece.  "Inspiration comes from everywhere I look bugs, listening to music, browsing art stores…"

Born in Gulfport, Nora moved to Memphis at the tender age of 16 to live with her sister and is a graduate of Collierville High School.  Attended Govenor's School for the Arts in Murfreesboro, TN her sophomore year.  She has been painting her entire life and was initially inspired by her mother.

"Mom would paint and I would have a canvas next to her on my own easel. I loved the meditative state the art put her in and always wondered where she went when she painted. I've found it now, my own place of pure freedom and expression and me time."

For several years her passion for art has burned like wildfire, providing a much-needed therapeutic release from the trials and tribulations of life.  "I was brought into this world not knowing my path, but I kept falling back into art.  Expressing myself is my adventure."

From 2005 to 2022, Nora was a quality assurance professional at a local avionics repair station in Memphis, TN where she started as a graphic designer and engineering assistant.  She describes herself as someone handy with tools, good at taking the ball and running with it and figuring out things on the fly, and also enjoys many DIY projects.

"There I was among 5 other individuals with similar drives and we created a shop together called Indie Artists' Market that began within Indie Acting Studio in Bartlett, TN then later on Madison Ave in Memphis, TN in the prior Echo's of Time antique store.  I unfortunately had to leave because of the move.  We were in an excellent location and unfortunately, the landlord needed to sell the property a year after I moved down here. The others are still doing what they love to do individually without a facility. To find out who they are you can visit the Indie Artists' Market page on Facebook.  Missing the vibes and the people the old shop provided I knew opening up a simple art gallery was what I wanted but mostly, emotionally, needed to do."

As of 2022, after 21 years in Memphis, TN, missing family and the Gulf Coast.  Nora now resides on the Gulf Coast again reestablishing her roots in the sand.  Continuing art and helping other artists grow their following as a Gallerist at The Fifth World Gallery, Located in Long Beach, MS.
